Health Days
Amidst a world
filled with the unwavering strength and collective harmony, we find ourselves
on the verge of World Cancer Day 2024. This worldwide event unites people from
all over the world, regardless of their nationality, culture, or background, as
they join forces to address the widespread issue of cancer. February 4th brings
the world together with the theme "Close the Care Gap," a day that
encourages reflection, action, and unity. This day serves as a reminder to not
only recognize the overwhelming impact of cancer disease, but also to rally
together in hope, support, and unwavering commitment to confront this potent
rival. As we explore the importance of World Cancer Day 2024, let us embark on
a journey that honours progress, recognizes challenges, and highlights the
strength we have when we come together against a common foe.
This significant
day was initially established at the World Summit Against Cancer for the New
Millennium in Paris on February 4, 2000.
The establishment
of World Cancer Day was instigated by the Union for International Cancer
Control (UICC), an international consortium comprising over a thousand
cancer-focused organizations. The UICC, established in 1933, is committed to
advancing the prevention and control of cancer worldwide.
The official World
Cancer Day website announced that the World Cancer Day 2024 agenda is
"Together, we challenge those in power." This agenda is a
continuation of the theme #CloseTheCareGap campaign, which began in 2022 and
runs for three years. Launching a multi-year campaign was intended to give more
time to reach target groups, raise cancer awareness, and eventually have a
greater global influence. The goal of the group is to persuade individuals in
authority to participate in the fight against cancer.
World Cancer Day
is an important day that is recognized worldwide to increase awareness about the
cancer tumor, as well as its prevention, detection, and treatment. This
day holds great importance as it brings together individuals,
organizations, and governments from all over the world in the battle against
cancer. This serves as a reminder of the significance of early detection,
maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and having access to appropriate medical care.
This International
Cancer Day emphasizes on raising awareness about the cancer signs and symptoms,
knowing about the various types of cancer like skin cancer, pancreatic cancer, cancer of the cervix, cancer in the breast, etc…, and educating people about the
causes of cancer, its risk factors, and promoting regular check-ups for the
cancer prevention. Additionally, this day seeks to lessen the stigma attached
to cancer and foster an environment that is encouraging to people who are
affected by the illness.
While certain
tumours are incurable, others, when detected early on, can be managed, and even
treated. It is therefore advised to consult an oncologist if you notice
any symptoms, in order to lower the incidence of cancer in the ensuing decades.
Follow a healthy lifestyle to lower the risk of cancer!
There were
approximately 20 million new cases of cancer and 10 million deaths from cancer
worldwide. The cancer burden is
projected to rise by around 60% in the coming two decades, placing additional
strain on health systems, individuals, and communities. By 2040, it is expected
that there will be a significant rise in the global burden of cancer, reaching
approximately 30 million new cases.
