Hair Care
“Hair fall”- Huuhh! What a traumatic experience!! Looking at the lump
of hair after combing it, makes our heart skip a beat. Every single time and
inducing the fear of going bald anytime soon. Losing 50-100 hair strains daily
is common, but if this is exceeding, then one needs to take a closer look at
their daily habits and lifestyle routine.
“Alopecia” – is the medical term coined for excessive hair fall, while
this may be attributed to genetics, illness, thyroid, hormonal imbalance, etc.,
our various everyday habits, that are too minute to be noticed, can also be an
underlying cause.
And if you wish to see more hair on your head rather than the brush,
then better stop doing the following things and start practicing a healthier
routine to grow your locks!
While many prefer to give their hair a heat treatment to make it look
silky straight or bouncy and curly, daily usage of a curling iron, hairdryer, or
straightener, is only causing more damage than giving that enhanced look to
your tresses. So, minimal or occasional use of the tools, with the lowest heating
options is what can save hair from getting broken due to excessive heat. Make
sure to use heat protectants and to keep your hair hydrated.
Grace yourself with a messy bun or any loose and free hairstyles to
keep your mane healthy. Hairstyles that involve pulling back hair into a tight
ponytail, braid, or bun cause follicle damage and in the worst case lead to
alopecia, as there is constant tension and pull. The use of silk scrunchies over
plastic or rubber elastic bands can also bid in saving one from hair fall
issues.
A well-known technique that has been
done perfectly wrong every single time! We tend to brush our hair in a rush and
just make sure our hair sits right in place. Well, that is where the damage
begins, brushing starts with detangling the hair from the lower ends towards the scalp.
Careless brushing along with tangles leads to hair breakage and uprooting from the scalp as well. When brushing wet hair, one must be very gentle and use only soft
bristles and wide tooth combs to prevent breakage.
Everyday washing can lead to the stripping of
natural oil that is present in hair and scalp. The only method to swear by while
washing hair is to use shampoo that is diluted with water on the scalp and
conditioner for hair length. After washing, it is better to let your hair air
dry using a cotton microfiber towel without rubbing, rather than using a blow
dryer.
Most of the shampoos and conditioners
that we use on a regular basis are loaded with hefty chemicals, which slowly
pave the way to hair fall and baldness. It is recommended to go through the
ingredients before buying any hair care product. The best advice is to use
natural products - organic soap nuts (reetha) as shampoo, yogurt for
conditioning, etc., as salon treatment products are also chemically loaded. Many of
our home-based and natural kitchen ingredients have several benefits that help
in maintaining strong hair than the chemical-laden
products.
Nothing like a hot shower at the end
of a long day. But guess what... This calming hot shower is not so soothing for
hair. Hot water dehydrates the scalp and hair, causing them to be vulnerable to
breakage and falling out. So, hair should be washed only using cold or lukewarm
water.
As much as external factors, internal
factors also have an equal impact on hair health. The so-called fancy diet names
followed by one when trying to lose weight can cause hair fall. Poor
nourishment and inconsistent diet lead to poor nourishment of the scalp and
eventually hair fall occurs. A sustainable diet consisting of fresh fruits and
vegetables, healthy fats, lean proteins, and whole grains, will make sure that
the required nutrition is met, and will help in keeping your hair and overall
health in good place.
Stress - As we all know, stress is a root cause of
not only hair loss but also various other problems in our lives. Stress hormones
released during this time can have a major impact on the hair growth cycle. But
this can also be reversed if one is mindful of caring for their body and
prioritising their mental health.
Making small alterations in the daily steps that we practice can bring in a lot of changes and may also help in the regrowth of hair. Proper sleep, diet, and mental health can all do wonders, if followed consistently, not only in maintaining manes but also for overall well-being.
The above-mentioned are the major causes for hair fall. Try to quit these, or you may also try to use some of the haircare products, maintain a healthy diet, and consult a dermatologist that would help your hair fall a bit less and nourish it better!

Alopecia is the medical term for excessive hair loss. It can be caused by various factors including genetics, illness, thyroid issues, and hormonal imbalances.
Washing hair daily can strip away natural oils. Instead, wash hair less frequently and use a diluted shampoo on the scalp and conditioner on the hair length. Allow hair to air dry when possible.
Ensure you get adequate sleep, maintain a healthy diet, and manage stress effectively. Consider using hair care products designed to strengthen and nourish hair and consult a dermatologist if needed.
